Credit Card Points & Optimization
Getting free travel and cash back without falling into the debt trap.
The one rule that matters
Only play this game if you pay your full statement balance automatically, every single month. Credit card interest (often 20%+ APR) instantly wipes out any points or cash back you could earn. If you carry a balance, skip this page and go read the Debt guide instead — it'll do far more for you.
Cash back vs. travel points
Cash back cards are simple and predictable: typically 1.5–2% back on everything, paid out as real money, no games required.
Travel points cards can be worth more per dollar (often 2–5%+ in effective value) if you redeem them well, but they're more complex, often carry an annual fee, and that extra value disappears fast if you redeem carelessly or let points expire.
A simple starter setup
One no-annual-fee flat-rate cash back card for everything is a completely reasonable place to stop. If you want to go further, add a card matched to your biggest spending category (groceries, gas, dining), and only consider a travel card once you're comfortable managing multiple cards and paying them off in full.
Things to watch for
• An annual fee is only worth it if you actually use the perks it unlocks — do the math, don't just assume.
• Sign-up bonuses require hitting a minimum spend in a window. Never spend more than you normally would just to chase one.
• Closing old cards can hurt your credit score by shortening your average account age and lowering your total available credit — see the Credit guide before you close anything.
Top sign-up bonuses right now
If you're in the market for a new card anyway, these are the highest-value personal card bonuses being tracked right now. Big bonuses often come with real annual fees — only apply if you'd hit the spend naturally, plan to pay in full, and are honest with yourself about whether you'll use the perks.
